Lufthansa uses Eurowings subsidiary for car shipment

COLOGNE: Lufthansa Cargo has used the bellyhold of an Eurowings A330 passenger flight for the first time to carry a SEAT Arona car from Cologne to South Africa.

Shipped on behalf of logistics specialist IQS Group, the airline partnered with Aircargo Consulting to devise a way of utilizing the aircraft rather than shipping the car on a freighter.

“This was preceded by several meetings with all parties involved, subsequent process descriptions and an operational risk analysis”, explained Joachim Binte, director Sales and Handling at Lufthansa Cargo in Cologne. “We have started with destinations in southern Africa and are planning to expand to other Eurowings destinations,” he added.

“With our expertise and the loading techniques we have developed, including the construction of a loading simulator, we ensure that the needs of our customers are met in the best possible way,” added Matthias Pfeilschifter, commercial director of Aircargo Consulting.
